Are White Kitchens Still Trending?

White kitchens first hit the scene in the 1920s, came back around in the 1980s, and reached their peak in 2020 and 2021. Over the last few years, the desire for all white kitchens is noticeably declining, with homeowners opting for a splash of color on their cabinets. Currently trending in kitchens are shades of green, blue, and even brown. Believe it or not, those spice cabinets that home builders went crazy with in the early 2000s are trending on the West Coast again, too!

Regardless of the current trends, history has communicated that a white kitchen is always a reliable and timeless choice in a home. Unsure which direction to move in for your upcoming kitchen renovation? Meet in the middle. Consider a few of our favorite ways to break up an all white kitchen:

Midnight Blue Island

If you're not ready to go all-in with color on all of your cabinets, start with your island. Midnight blue is one of our favorite colors for an island. We've been using it in some of our projects since 2017, and we love seeing it gain popularity!

This kitchen boasts a midnight blue island, marble countertops, and a classic subway tile backsplash. This kitchen is simple, attainable, and warm.

Our first time trying a midnight blue island was in our Castle project in Northern Virginia. The extended island exceeded 10 feet and created a focal point, elongating the space. Greek Villa by Sherwin Williams on the upper and lower cabinets contrasted beautifully with midnight blue and seamlessly tied the dark hardwood floors together.

Dark Lowers, Light Uppers

Split your cabinet colors! A great way to add dimension to your kitchen is to try a darker color for the lower cabinets and white or lighter color on the upper cabinets. For your lower cabinets, pick a color that compliments your flooring.

Wood Island

Last but certainly not least, consider breaking up your white kitchen by adding a wood island to your space. Light cabinets, light countertops, and a lightly stained wood island is perfect combination! We love seeing this design concept applied in cabins, cottages, and bright and airy beach houses.

I love the blue island with the white cabinets. It breaks up the stark feeling of all white, while warming the space.
